Assessment IS Learning
The key to start any intervention program is finding out what your student(s) are missing. Using an assessment, like the ones presented below by Heggerty and Really Great Reading, allow you to see (1) what phonemic awareness skills (e.g. rhyming, first sounds awareness, and syllable segmentation) your students are missing as well as (2) what symbol (grapheme) skills your students are missing (e.g. R-Controlled vowels, digraphs, vowel teams.)
Once you determine your students gaps, use the phonemic awareness findings to correlate where to begin with Heggerty Bridge the Gap: Intervention Lessons. Next, use the decoding assessments and match your findings to the Steps to Success. You are now ready to begin instruction with the Lesson Breakdown and Vowel Valley as a guide.
